Immunity: Gutt Health is wealth
This months workshop is from expert & Nutrition Coach Ravneet Panesar who realised her weight was just the ‘surface marker’ of how I judged her self-worth.
What is your background?
I’m your typical south Asian woman, daughter of immigrant parents, reasonable educational attainment yet suffered most of my life feeling unfulfilled and unhappy. It all came to a head when I got pregnant with both my boys! I put on over 20kgs (44lbs) after my first pregnancy and I felt ostracized and judged by people who seemed more concerned about my physical appearance than my mental health.
I tried so many weight loss methods/diets/supplements. Even at my ‘fittest’ I was still trying to perfect my body, forever dissatisfied and then regaining the weight. I suffered post-natal depression after my second child and promised I would focus on my mental well-being NOT the number on the scales. After successful CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) I finally found the tools to start my self-healing journey and figure out what mattered to me.
Where does your passion for nutrition come from?
My passion to become a nutrition coach came from my desire to work with other mums who have been be struggling with post baby body issues, ready to improve their health without all the faff and falsities of the mainstream fad diets.. I wanted to prove the huge money making diet industry wrong so that other mums didn’t have to go through the struggles of impossible plans and diets.
I now help mums regain self-confidence and self-esteem, supporting their transformations through a ‘less is more’ approach and gentle nutrition. No ‘all or nothing’ quick fixes. I support you to visualise the bigger picture by changing your food behaviours through empowerment of choice.
Why is gut health so important? How can it help us holistically in our life?
You have trillions of microbes that reside in your gut and they have a huge impact on many aspects of your health including your ability to digest ‘healthy’ food. These bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses release chemicals that influence your weight, immunity, cardiovascular system, mental health and even your susceptibility to acne, allergies and cancer. Crazy important right!
Your gut microbiome plays a key role in controlling oxidative stress and inflammatory responses as well as improving metabolism and energy expenditure during endurance exercise. With better immunity, you’re less like to suffer illnesses and gut problems – pretty awesome!
There are now proven links between your gut bacteria diversity and your mental health, yup – anxiety, depression and dementia can be triggered by a compromised gut microbiome.
Can you tell us a story of a client you worked with and how the changes you recommended changed their life?
I recently caught up with one of my December 2020 graduates and she shared:
“I have defo taken soo much on after the course and honestly it has been fab, eating the rainbow colours and whatever I want in moderation and not being on a diet
My confidence has increased soo much after the course, I cannot explain. I always felt as an Indian Mum, I needed to be able to cook all the food all the time for my little family, but the tips, quick tricks and nutritional advice that I have learnt from you, are lifelong and honestly the best!l
I don’t want to waffle but a couple of things from this year, because I was not obsessed about my weight or food and was not stressy:
– Completing my legal studies
– Buying a house
– Actually going down the slide in soft play (this was a biggy!)
– Wearing dresses (which show my legs – like what who am I?)
– Doing kickboxing 2-3 times a week (my fave sport/workout)
– From size 24-26 to size 18”
What could be better than this? Her size is the last thing she lists because the changes are so much more profound than what we weigh and how we look, it’s all about how we feel.
You’ll be talking about immunity, what does it mean to have a healthy immune system?
The overall function of the immune system is to prevent or limit infection. So people who are immune-compromised, including those with genetic immune disorders, immune-debilitating infections like HIV, and even pregnant women, are susceptible to a range of microbes that typically do not cause infection in healthy individuals.
Your immune system can recognise signals to address a threat/problem. If you have a less than ideal immune response, problems arise, like infection. On the other hand, when an immune response is activated without a real threat or is not turned off once the danger passes, different problems arise, such as allergic reactions and autoimmune disease. An immune system ‘too switched on’
So good immune health = a good healthier life
